Sydney Pollack’s “The way we were” was my ultimate choice for best romantic movie of all time. I know my choice is shared by millions of others around the globe, it probably even made few extraterrestrials cry as well ( if they existed, but that’s not a post about aliens).

Now that I moved back home, I was forced to share a room with my youngest sister, Kamar. With an age difference of 11 years, I decided to involve her with some of my favorite books, thoughts and films as a way to bond. It didn’t go too well, she slept while watching “scent of a woman” , it took her 3 days to watch “sleepers” and she didn’t understand what “Cloud Atlas” meant, at all! I am not complaining though, at least we’re not watching Lizzy Mcguire adventures, so it’s all good!

With valentine around the corner Kamar starts craving what any 19 year old wants to have, red teddy bears, a box of chocolate and a good tearjerker film. I thought my favorite movie would definitely be a winner as it would make her cry for two days non stop and have her listen to Streisand songs on a looping playlist ( that was my case everytime I watch it).

Well, it worked! Barbara’s songs filled the room since the early morning and Kamar wouldn’t stop talking about how sad it was that Katie and Hubbel didn’t end up together after everything they’ve been through. The title of the movie was on her whatsapp status and movie quotes surfaced on her facebook page.

However, for the very first time, I didn’t shed a single tear when watching this film. In fact, I got mad! I felt betrayed by ideologies on love that never really existed and I felt furious to know that my ultimate movie about love was far from being one..

Let me tell you why

  1. Hubbel might have an admiration for Katie, he’s fond of her, but was really never in love with her. He was always upset by her ideas and what she stood up for, he didn’t like her to speak up and he seemed to be a big fan of women who were on the lighter side of life and didn’t have much to say.
  2. Katie was so much in love with Hubbel, too much for her own good. What I once thought was an act of love made me feel sad yesterday. I am referring to the part where she takes him home and makes love to him when he was too wasted to know what was going on. You’re Barbara woman! that was a stupid thing to do, you can’t possibly be that desperate
  3. There is an undeniable connection between the two, but not a comforting one. You feel that Hubbel is forced to be in this relationship and he can do very well without it, which he did..eventually
  4. I am with a strong woman, a woman who knows what she wants, but after Hubble breaks up with her and she calls him, it felt like she dragged him out of the house to go meet her. He didn’t want to bother with her anymore, you can feel it
  5. What kind of a man leaves a woman who just gave birth to his child! In the hospital room, with tears in her eyes..To think I used to find this so romantic, what was I thinking!?

This is a movie about a failed relationship, not love… And I don’t need such movies, I can just remember any relationship I had for the past 15 years et voila! you get a movie based on true events

Bottom line: I need to find my new ultimate favorite romantic movie..and so a new search begins..
